Rosa Maria Edith Abraira's Obituary
Rosa Abraira, M.D., passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026, following complications related to cancer. She leaves behind a profound legacy of healing, laughter, and a vibrant love of life that spanned continents and generations.
Born and raised in the Almagro neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rosa developed a passion for medicine and culture. She attended the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, graduating with her Medical Degree in 1962. It was during her studies in 1959 that she met her lifelong partner, Carlos Abraira. They married in 1963 and soon moved to the United States to build their careers and family.
Rosa dedicated her work to the mental health of children and families. In Chicago, Illinois, she completed her Residency in Psychiatry and a Fellowship at the Institute for Juvenile Research (IJR). After finishing her training in 1967, she served on the IJR staff until 1970. In 1973, Rosa established a successful private practice, balancing inpatient and outpatient care, while also serving as a unit director and medical director at Chicago Area hospitals.
Rosa held a deep gratitude to Argentina for providing the education that allowed her to build a rewarding career in medicine. She equally loved the United States for the excellent opportunities it afforded her—granting her exceptional clinical training, a flourishing career, and a loving family. She often remarked on how these twin worlds opened the door to the wonderful life she built.
After retiring from private practice in 1999, Rosa and Carlos relocated to Miami, Florida. Her passion for helping others never waned; in 2001, she began working part-time at a non-profit clinic treating outpatient youth, continuing her mission of supporting vulnerable children.
Beyond her professional achievements, Rosa truly knew how to live. She possessed a wonderful, sharp sense of humor and a quick wit that brought joy and laughter to every room she entered. She was an avid reader, a passionate traveler, and a true aficionada of the arts. Music was a central pillar of her life. In Chicago, she was a dedicated subscription holder to both the opera and the symphony. In Miami, she became an active member of the New World Symphony. A crowning joy for Rosa was attending the entire epic opera cycle of Wagner.
Above all, Rosa cherished people. She was a loving friend who enjoyed gathering with loved ones, sharing good stories, good food, and celebrating life's moments. Her character was one of generosity, kindness, and strength. She is survived by her devoted son, Daniel, and his wife, Holly; her loving daughter, Irene, and her husband, Andrew Ilachinski; and her two cherished grandchildren, Noah and Joshua, who brought endless happiness to her life. While we mourn her loss, we live knowing she left a deep and positive mark on those who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Rosa’s lifelong commitment to healthcare access and autonomy, her family requests that donations be made to Compassion & Choices or Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
